Cienfuegos is the southern central province of Cuba. It is surrounded to the south and east by Las Villas, to the north by Sancti Spíritus, to the west by Matanzas and to the south by the sea. It has an area of 5,017.7 km2 and a total population of 571,501 inhabitants (2019), according to the population census conducted by the National Institute of Statistics in Cuba. The capital of the province is the city of Cienfuegos, renowned for its colonial architecture and port.
Its historical and architectural heritage is rich and varied. The architectural style of Cienfuegos is a reflection of the influence of the Spanish and American past. The downtown area of the city is a tourist and commercial zone and is known as the "Historic Center of Cienfuegos". It is full of historic buildings, such as the Tomás Terry Theater, the remains of a Spanish fort, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and the House of Domingo Gómez de la Torre.
